Folk House

Sharing some music today.

Among the many types of music I listen to, I’ve been really into Folk House music lately. As the name suggests, it’s a mix between folk music (e.g. Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Young and the Giant) and EDM.

For me, Folk House is the next iteration of Tropical House (e.g. Kygo, Thomas Jack, Klingande), which was the first type of music that really felt like mine. (see a brief history of my music upbringing below).

The key DJ duo I associate with Folk House is BUNT. I have a feeling they’re going to become a lot more prominent in the next year or two.

Here’s an AWESOME playlist they put together and update often:

I also bucket the country / house music mix into this.

Avicii (RIP) had started to make more of this music and I feel like it’s still on the up and up. Examples being ‘Wake me Up’, ‘The Nights’, ‘Without You’, and ‘Hey Brother’. Kygo is now following suit with ‘Happy Now’ and ‘Never Let You Go’. Marshmello recently released ‘One Thing Right’ which blew up.

This is my mix of favorite Folk House, Country House, and a bit of Tropical House music which has quite a few fans. 10/10 recommend:

A mix of some of my favorite tunes

A brief background of my music history:

I have 3 older siblings (2 brothers and a sister). Basically growing up I adopted most of the things my brothers liked.

This included music. Which meant through my sophomore year of high school I listed to alternative rock and dis-liked pop music. Metallica, Shinedown, Audioslave, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, 3 Doors Down, Cold. Some pretty depressing shit tbh.

Thankfully there was a little bit more energetic music mixed in there as well with Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, and my sister listening to Hot Hot Heat, RHCP, and The Killers.

My parents didn’t listen to much music, but my dad did listen to Shania Twain which I now have a sweet spot for as well. (Come on Over and That Don’t Impress Me Much being my favorites)

When I was in the house by myself my junior and senior year of high school I picked up pop music from my friends and always had the best ‘throwback’ playlists (really just all the pop music the was new for me because my household didn’t listen to it).

None of it really felt like mine though.

It wasn’t until I discovered Tropical House my senior year of college that I really found MY music.

Thomas Jack, Kygo, Matoma, Sam Feldt, Klingande, Mowe, Boehm, Lost Frequencies, etc.

Listening to tropical house music just put me in the best mood. Still puts me in the best mood.

I had so much fun waiting for new music to come out. I spent almost all my downtime at work in my first job combing through Soundcloud to find the latest releases. It was always such a good day when a new Kygo song came out.

My soundcloud is honestly still so great (start at the bottom of my likes list for the best tunes):

I also got super into two YouTube channels (with my ex), which are also still incredibly great:

Now I still love Tropical House, have found Folk House, listen to a bunch of pop music, EDM (especially for workouts), electropop, some R&B, and a bit of everything else. I don’t listen to much hip hop or rap, and have completely given up on the alternative rock my brother’s started me out with.

Honestly, my music journey is a bit of a corollary for my whole life (and probably a lot of others with older siblings as well): Originally I started liking what older siblings like, then I started to like popular things as I grew up, and finally I started to form my own opinions and habits as I was exposed to more things.
